Trading cards

I was surprised to have recently discovered the variety of trading cards devoted to animals. In this post I show 10 cards featuring the California condor.

The oldest card that I have is dated 1962:
01 Trading card - 1962 McGraw-Hill - front01 Trading card - 1962 McGraw-Hill - reverse
As this is from the book publisher McGraw-Hill, perhaps this was intended as a flash card for learning about birds.

The information on this next card dates it to the late 1980s or early 1990s:
02 Trading card - Panini - front02 Trading card - Panini - reverse

The San Diego Zoo offered a pair of cards, both dated 1993:
03 Trading card - 1993 SD Zoo 1 - front03 Trading card - 1993 SD Zoo 1 - reverse

04 Trading card - 1993 SD Zoo 2 - front04 Trading card - 1993 SD Zoo 2 - reverse

Although labeled “Card 40”, this next is perhaps better described as a 4-page brochure:
05 Trading card - 1998 International Masters - pg 105 Trading card - 1998 International Masters - pg 2
05 Trading card - 1998 International Masters - pg 305 Trading card - 1998 International Masters - pg 4

Here’s a card produced by affiliated supermarket chains:
06 Trading card - Winn Dixie - front06 Trading card - Winn Dixie - reverse

The next 2 cards are from companies that have long-produced baseball cards. Despite their “old time” appearance, they are both less than a decade old:
07 Trading card - 2009 Champs - front07 Trading card - 2009 Champs - reverse

08 Trading card - 2015 Topps - front08 Trading card - 2015 Topps - reverse

Finally, here are a pair of cards, one of which holds a penny that has been stamped with an image of the California condor:
09 Trading cards - Penny Men 1 - front09 Trading cards - Penny Men 1 - reverse

10 Trading cards - Penny Men 2 - front10 Trading cards - Penny Men 2 - reverse

I hope that trading cards such as these promote interest in and concern for animals of all kinds.
